Instead of focusing on the horrific results of yesterday’s Wimbledon final, I am instead going to talk about what I love about the men’s game. After some 35 years of fandom I’m afraid I won’t be watching much more of the men’s game until Andy Murray is no longer around on the second weeks of Slams. So, this is my ode to the game I used to love. In no specific order here are my favorite tennis memories.
~ Bjorn Borg. No explanation is necessary.
~ The battle of 18-16 fourth set tie breaker from the 1980 Wimbledon finals. John McEnroe might have won the 4th set battle, but Bjorn Borg won the war.
~ Vitas Gerulaitis and those yellow shorts he wore at the US Open.
~ Booty shorts in men’s tennis from the 80s.
~ Pete Sampras ending his career with that one last US Open title.
~ Getting to see John McEnroe and Boris Becker play an exhibition match in person.
~ The epic 2011 six hour Australian Open final with Nole and Rafa.
~ Rafa Nadal winning 8 French Opens.
~ The Nadal vs. Federer rivalry.
~ Watching Roger Federer from that first win against Sampras at Wimbledon through winning every one of his Grand Slam titles.
~ Goran Ivanisevic FINALLY getting his Wimbledon title on a Monday morning final.
~ The Roger Federer vs. Andy Roddick Wimbledon final.
~ Sampras vs. Agassi.
~ Pete Sampras puking on the court and still beating Alex Correttja 4th round US Open match.
~ Novak Djokovic kicking celiac disease’s ass to become the champion that he is.
~ Bjorn Borg…
Such a shame that Andy Murray has destroyed my love for the men’s game.
